Maryland Free Death Records

• Many Maryland death records are available online, for free, from the Maryland Vital Records Indexing Project (see link below).
• Available indexes include the twenty-three counties other than Baltimore City for 1898-1944, and for Baltimore City from 1875 to 1972.
  
• If you need copies of the death certificates from the Vital Records Indexing Project, just click on the image and you will be taken to a page where you can order them.
• If you need a more recent death certificate, download this Application for a Copy of Death Certificate from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
• Fill out the above application and mail it, along with any applicable fees and a copy of your government issued photo identification, to:

Notes:

• Maryland is a "closed record state," meaning not anyone can obtain a certified death record. Only the following people can:
  • Surviving relative of the deceased
  • Authorized representative of a surviving relative of the deceased
  • Funeral director who was in charge of the final disposition of the body of the deceased
  • An individual who has a proven legal need
  • Court of law
